Tuscaloosa Track Club Member of the Month
Tuscaloosa Track Club loves to spotlight our members. One of our newest members Roy Meeks is new to TTC, but isn’t new to running. He started running in 1984 once he decided he wasn’t going to continue to play football after high school. So, as a student at the University of Alabama he chose running as a health choice. Roy went against everyone’s suggestion to start small, and made his first race a 50 miler at Oak Mountain Park. He was hooked after that, and looked for races he could travel to. His running resume includes over 300 races (he has the bib numbers to prove it), including 5Ks to Ultras. Roy completed his first Boston Marathon in 1993, which today is one of his favorite race experiences of all time.
Roy left Alabama for Florida, and has recently retired as a Regional Administrator after 25 years with a company in Florida that provided psychological, neurological and behavioral services for children and adolescents. Roy’s wife, Trish, has been itching to move for the past 10 years, so after Roy enjoyed 2 years after retirement doing his thing....hiking the Appalachian Trail, canoeing the boundary water of Minnesota and Canada, backpacking in New Mexico and various white water rafting trips, Trish told him he had to get a job!!! So, Roy recently came back home to Alabama and took a job with the University of Alabama as the Director of Training with Brewer Porch Children’s Center. Alas, Trish and Roy’s youngest son, Nathan (junior in high school) are still in Florida trying to sell their house. Roy’s oldest son, Justin, just graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and is currently working in Nashville with the Tennessee DOT.
Roy says that running has always kept him grounded, focused and healthy. He is a very energetic person and running has always been his outlet for peace. We all can relate to Roy that running allows the best thinking and reflection. Roy says there’s nothing like running down a long isolated road either early in the morning or at dusk listening to the sound of crickets, birds chirping and the wind blowing through the trees.
We can’t wait for Trish and family to get her so Roy can introduce them to his new running friends here in Tuscaloosa.
Since Roy join the Tuscaloosa Track Club, he’s run in almost every race on the schedule and has put in his volunteer time too!!! Welcome Roy, so glad you found us!
