Age: 56
Years Running: 4 (It’s never too late to start!)
My Favorite Race:
TNT 10k & Fat Danny’s Trial by Trail
Why? Great people attend the TNT10k; seems like I
have a lot of fun there. The Fat Danny course is
challenging.
Why do you run?: Good question. First, I guess, I run for
health. There’s nothing like the feeling of being fit, of being
able to move with strength and grace. Second, it’s an outlet
for my competitive urge; mostly I compete with myself – to
run the trail faster, or with less effort, or with more “style”
than the last time. Last, you meet the best people when you
run together.
I usually run:
Time of Day: mid-morning or evening
Days: every other day or so
Avg. Training Pace: Penguin pace – 10:00
Avg. Race Pace: Try to break 25 minutes in a 5k
Favorite Training Route: Lake Lurleen trail
Favorite Running Shoes: Ones that don’t give me
blisters. Actually, I’m still trying different shoes out.
It’s worth going to a shoe store where the salespeople
are knowledgeable and helpful. You have to take the
time to understand your body and the way it moves
and combine that with the knowledge of the sales
person to arrive at the right shoe for the way you run.
It takes time and an open mind. You are wasting your
money and hurting yourself if you buy from a catalog.
After all I’ve been through I can’t help but wonder how
many people suffer and quit running simply because
they are wearing the wrong shoes.
What is your occupation: I’m the Electrical Engineer
for Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa.
Comments: Looking forward to the Monday runs at
Sokol Park.

Years Running: 11
My Favorite Race: Well, not my favorite, but rather my
most memorable: DCH Jingle Bell 5K, December 1995
Why? This was not only my first race but also the first time
I ran outside (I'd been doing my training on a treadmill). I
also met Laurie Arizumi at this race, too.
I hadn't been training long and I was very inexperienced. It
was about 50 degrees outside. I was worried about getting
too cold, so I made sure I wore enough layers: a jog bra, a
long-sleeved t-shirt, a sweat shirt, a neck gaiter, a fleece
headband, gloves, and sweat pants (not tights). Clearly, I
had no clue!. To top it off, I went out much too fast. By the
time I reached the end of the parking lot, I knew I was in
trouble. When I got to the base of the first hill, I thought I
was going to die. But I stuck it out. I finished the run and -
big surprise - placed in my age group.
Why do you run?: The Saturday group runs are my
social life! It's a great stress reliever, a good way to
stay in shape, and one way to get some time to myself
now and again.
I usually run:
Time of Day: Usually 6 am but I am known to go out at
4:30 am when the school year gets in full swing.
Days: Saturday group run, Tuesdays, Thursdays
Avg. Training Pace: Well, is this pre- or post-knee
surgery? Let's just say I was staying around 8:50s
Avg. Race Pace: Haven't done a race in a while.
Favorite Training Route: What I call "The Original": the first
course I ever ran outside. It was in April 1996 and I was with Bobby
Edmonds. It is a 6.5-miler that leaves from the Student Rec Center,
goes along Jack Warner Parkway, up Queen City, along 13th
Street, down Hackberry to University, up University toward the
hospital and back down to the SRC. It's a good standard distance
with a few hills and some interesting neighborhoods.
Favorite Running Shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (Love them!)
What is your occupation: Professor of Asian art history
at UA since 1993.
Comments: My job pays the mortgage but running is my
life! I've so enjoyed all the people I've met through the sport,
particularly members of the TTC, and participants in the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training.
